United wiped out my $4.5K Polaris credit after using “combine credits”

I’m still kind of stunned by this. I canceled a Polaris flight and got a future flight credit around $4,500, valid for travel through March 2026. All confirmed in my account.

Months later I tried to book a cheap $500 flight and used United’s “combine credits” option with two small credits, maybe $100 to $200 each. Seemed harmless. No warnings at all.

Now United says that by combining them, the entire balance took the earliest expiration date. Result is the big credit is gone. They admit the credit existed and had a balance. They’re just saying an internal rule caused it to expire.

I honestly can’t believe there was no clear warning that combining credits would silently wipe out a multi-thousand-dollar credit. If I’d seen anything like that, I obviously wouldn’t have touched it.
