Flight 887 LIM to EWR last night. Took off late, about an hour in we turned back for mechanical issues. Totally fine with that part. Safety first.
Everything after was a mess.
Told to call United. 1K line couldn’t help and said we had to wait at the airport counter. Over 200 people trying to rebook. It’s 3am, I’m in line with my 6 year old, and there’s no one at the counter for almost an hour.
Only option we’re given is Avianca via Bogotá. “Business class” but not lie flat. I paid cash for Polaris because it was an overnight on my birthday and wanted my wife and daughter comfortable. United is now saying no refund because we’re still technically in business class.
We were also stuck overnight in Lima airport. No hotel, no food, and the taxi voucher the airport desk handed out apparently isn’t valid according to United.
I get that IRROPS happen. What I don’t get is paying for Polaris and being told a recliner seat on another carrier is basically the same thing.
Has anyone actually gotten a partial refund in a situation like this? Or is this just one of those “take the miles and move on” outcomes?
