I’m flying from Melbourne to Glasgow in August to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships, and I need to take my bass drum with me. It’s a 25 kg drum in a hard case, but it’s too large to qualify under Qantas’s musical instrument allowance. I’ve found information saying I need to pre-purchase extra baggage, and the only cost estimate I could find was $80 per kg, which would total around $2,000, that seems extremely high.
Because this drum is essential (it matches the rest of the band’s equipment), I really need to take this specific one.
Has anyone dealt with similar oversized baggage charges or know what the actual costs or options might be?
