I’ve been flying a bit more over the past few years with United Airlines and have ended up on the Polaris and Premium Plus upgrade lists a few times.
Recently, I’ve noticed a few things that don’t really make sense to me. The upgrade list now seems to show up only about 2 days before departure instead of earlier, and my position on the list keeps moving up and down multiple times for the same flight.
What’s more confusing is seeing situations where someone at the top of the list with plenty of open seats doesn’t get upgraded, while other passengers who weren’t even showing on the list suddenly appear as confirmed upgrades.
On top of that, people on the list are paying the co-pay (around $600), which gets charged right away, but refunds seem to take a while if the upgrade doesn’t clear (still waiting on mine).
Just trying to understand what I might be missing here. Is there any clear explanation of how the upgrade priority and process actually works behind the scenes?
