You’re never really “traveling like a local” and that’s fine

I keep seeing posts about getting the “authentic” experience or avoiding tourists. But let’s be real if you leave your country, you’re a tourist. You’re adding yourself to the crowd, no matter how you got there or how long you stay.

The best thing you can do is respect local customs, be polite, and enjoy the trip. Tourist spots are popular for a reason. If you really want zero tourists in Japan, go work on a farm in a rural village but then you’re not traveling, you’re relocating.

I live abroad half the year and still stick out everywhere I go. And that’s totally okay.
