Witnessing Arizona's haboob, dusty and dazzling experience

My recent travels through Phoenix, I found myself caught in the middle of a massive haboob a giant dust storm that rolled in like a scene out of a sci-fi movie. These storms form when thunderstorm winds push air down and out, picking up desert dust and debris along the way.

The storm reduced visibility to nearly zero and grounded flights at Sky Harbor. It was intense, disorienting, and humbling to witness nature’s raw force in action. Thankfully, I was safe and off the roads, but it gave me a new appreciation for desert weather and a reminder to always check the forecast in monsoon season.

Has anyone else experienced a haboob before?

A haboob covered central Arizona in dust. But what exactly is it?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, these storms can whip up walls of dust as high as 10,000 feet.
