I recently returned from a sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas departing from Los Angeles, and I witnessed something at the buffet that honestly shocked me.
A man in front of me wiped his nose with his hand, then immediately grabbed a salad dressing container. He covered the open pour spout with his finger, shook the bottle aggressively, and then placed it back without even using it.
I was honestly stunned watching it happen. After a moment, I informed the buffet staff so they could remove the contaminated dressing container.
What really bothered me afterward was realizing that if I hadn’t seen it happen, nobody would have known the food item had been contaminated. It made me wonder how often similar things happen unnoticed at self-serve buffets.
Experiences like this make me wish cruise buffets operated more like assisted-service stations where crew members serve the food instead of passengers handling shared containers and utensils.
