Window seat boarding etiquette question

This morning’s boarding made me second guess something I’ve apparently been doing the same way for 30 years.

I had the window. Middle was empty. Aisle was working on her laptop. I say I have 12A, she barely looks up and tells me she’ll get up after I put my bag in the overhead.

So I set my tote on the floor, put my bag up, a line forms behind me, then I grab my tote and ask again to get into my seat.

Every other time I’ve been in this situation, the aisle passenger just stands up and lets the window slide in, usually putting their tote briefly on the middle seat and then stowing it. That’s what I’ve always done too.

Have I been doing this wrong all these years? Genuinely asking, not complaining.
