I’ve been trying to figure out the rules around rural or wild camping in Italy and the info online is all over the place.
I understand that private land is a no unless you have permission. What I’m confused about is public land and national parks. Is overnight camping ever allowed there, or is it totally banned no matter what?
More specifically, if you’re hiking or bikepacking and just pitch a small tent for one night, away from roads, houses, and people, then leave early the next morning. No fires, no multiple nights. Is that still considered illegal camping, or does it fall under bivouacking?
Some countries make a clear distinction, others don’t, and Italy seems especially murky. I’m trying to do this responsibly, not push limits.
Would really appreciate input from locals or anyone who’s actually done this in Italy and knows how it works in practice.
