Why some 5 star hotels knock and ring before opening the room

Yes, it’s very normal, especially at higher end hotels, and it’s not because the room might not be ready.

The knock and ring is mostly about safety, privacy, and liability. Even if the system says the room is vacant and cleaned, mistakes do happen. Guests sometimes get extended stays, staff accidentally reassign rooms, or someone could still be inside. Knocking protects both the guest and the hotel.

It’s also a legal and brand standard thing. Luxury hotels tend to follow strict SOPs, even if they feel a bit theatrical. It shows respect for privacy and avoids the worst case scenario of walking in on someone.

In some properties, especially in Asia and the Middle East, it’s also part of the service ritual. Escorting you, ringing the bell, opening the door, and doing a quick room intro is meant to feel polished, not improvised.

So yeah, it can feel performative, but it’s really about consistency and avoiding very awkward or serious mistakes.
