Why long term SEA trips seem to stall around 4 to 6 months

I’ve noticed this too, especially in Southeast Asia. You meet people who planned to be gone “a year or more” and by month four or five they’re either booking a flight home or settling into a hostel job somewhere.

From what I’ve seen, it’s usually a mix of things. Money starts to feel tighter than expected, even in cheap countries. Visas become annoying and repetitive. The constant moving gets tiring. And honestly, the novelty wears off. Beaches, temples, night markets, rinse and repeat.

A lot of people also hit a weird mental wall. Travel stops feeling like an adventure and starts feeling like daily life, just without stability. That’s often when people either quit or try to anchor themselves by working at a hostel or bar for a bit.

Not a bad thing at all, just interesting how common that 4 to 6 month mark seems to be.
