Why is taking the train always so much more expensive?

I was looking at options for a trip and wanted to take Eurostar instead of flying to be a bit more environmentally friendly.

But when you actually compare the prices it’s kind of shocking. The train ends up being way more expensive than flying for the same trip.

At some point it becomes really hard to justify paying that much extra just to avoid a short flight.

Makes me wonder if trains will ever realistically compete on price.
