I’ve found that restaurants in Europe often push bottled water, even when you’re dining in and ordering food. Even if you request tap water, they sometimes still bring bottled and charge for it.
In North America, getting a free glass of tap water is standard almost everywhere, so this difference feels strange. I get that restaurants want to increase revenue, but it also seems wasteful in terms of plastic use.
Is tap water not safe to drink, or is this mainly just a business and cultural norm?
