Saw a strong post from a flight attendant explaining why passengers grabbing their bags during an evacuation is such a serious problem.
Airlines train crews to evacuate a full aircraft in about 90 seconds, even in conditions like smoke or fire. The issue is that many passengers believe grabbing their personal item will only take “a second or two.”
But when 100+ passengers all think the same thing, those seconds add up and can seriously slow down evacuation when every moment matters.
The post pushed back on common reasons people give for grabbing bags:
Medications – emergency crews and hospitals can help replace them
Phones, wallets, IDs – these can often be carried in pockets instead of bags
Expensive items like laptops or purses – they’re replaceable, lives aren’t
Small bags or cross-body purses – straps can snag on seats or block aisles during chaos
Another risk is that bags can damage evacuation slides or cause people to trip while trying to exit quickly.
The overall point from the flight attendant perspective is simple:
If the plane is burning or filling with smoke, the priority is getting everyone out alive, not retrieving personal belongings.
