Why does United face more competition at SFO than EWR?

Curious about something United’s market share at SFO is only around 47%, while at EWR they basically dominate the airport.

Why is there so much more competition on the West Coast, even though SFO’s been a United hub for decades? You’d think NYC’s higher demand would make it tougher to hold market share.
