Why does my girlfriend get “random” security checks every single time?

My girlfriend is 21 and Colombian, and she gets selected for the “random” extra check at security literally every time she flies. Domestic or international, doesn’t matter. Meanwhile I’m also from Latin America (just not Colombian) and I haven’t been pulled aside in almost two years.

We’re not upset about it since it’s usually quick, but it does make us wonder how random this actually is.

Is it based on nationality, passport, travel history, or something like facial recognition? Or is it just how the system flags people and she’s unlucky? We’re flying mostly in Spain, if that matters.

Just genuinely curious if anyone knows how these “random” checks actually work behind the scenes.
