Why are flights always 100% full now, even red eyes?

I fly a lot, like 20 to 30 times a year, and something feels very different lately. Almost every international flight I’m on is full, and honestly it feels like 100% of my domestic flights are too.

What really gets me is the timing doesn’t seem to matter anymore. Early morning flights? Full. Red eyes? Also full.

I’m about to take an LAX to Chicago red eye leaving at 11:30pm and arriving around 5:30am. They announced the flight is completely full and warned people they may need to check carry ons due to limited overhead space. On a red eye.

I remember flying red eyes back around 2012 and half the plane would be empty. You could stretch out, sometimes even lie down across seats. Now it feels impossible to find a flight that isn’t packed.

What changed? Fewer flights? Better load management? Airlines just that good at filling seats now?
