Where’s a good area to stay in Singapore for first timers?

Trying to help my mum and her partner plan their first Singapore trip in late August and could use some advice.

They’re both mid 60s and fine with walking, usually around 10k steps a day, but they’ve never been to Singapore so I’m not sure how they’ll feel once they’re actually there. They want to hit the usual first time stuff like Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, Merlion Park, Botanical Gardens, Orchard Road, etc.

Looking for areas to stay that are close to things or at least easy to get around. They like the idea of walking to explore, but also want to be close to MRT or easy taxis for when they don’t feel like walking.

I’ve heard Chinatown and Bugis are good options, but wanted to see what others would recommend, especially for older first time visitors.

Also open to any must see suggestions while I’m at it.

Thanks in advance.
