Delta Air Lines acquired most of its Boeing 717 fleet as part of a strategic deal following Southwest Airlines’ acquisition of AirTran Airways. When Southwest decided not to integrate the 717s into its operations, Delta seized the opportunity to sublease the aircraft, strengthening its domestic network at a lower cost than purchasing new planes. This move allowed Delta to efficiently replace its aging DC-9 fleet while expanding short- and medium-haul service across the United States.
The Boeing 717s have since become a reliable backbone for Delta’s regional operations, known for their durability, fuel efficiency, and suitability for high-frequency routes. Although smaller than most mainline jets, they provide flexibility in serving secondary markets and maintaining schedule consistency, reflecting Delta’s strategy of optimizing its fleet for operational efficiency and customer convenience.
