When I see a sign saying Amex is not accepted, I usually assume it actually is

Whenever I see a sign that explicitly says American Express is not accepted, it actually makes me more suspicious that they probably do accept it anyway.

In my experience, these signs are often outdated or not fully updated across all payment terminals.

It has become a bit of a running assumption for me that if a place has to advertise it so clearly, there is at least a chance that Amex still works there in practice.
