Flying first class for less than coach feels like stumbling onto a secret menu item nobody tells you about.
I was booking a Washington DC to Austin flight recently, and out of the first nine options, first class was only about $100 more than economy. When you factor in the free checked bags, meals, extra legroom, and the fact that I wouldn’t have to wedge myself into a middle seat, it almost felt silly not to book it.
American Airlines is clearly pushing more aggressive upgrade offers, especially on flights where the front cabin isn’t selling out. And while it might make first class feel a little less exclusive, it’s also making it far more accessible for travelers who keep an eye on prices.
I used to think first class was just for splurges or points redemptions, but lately, it’s starting to feel like the smarter buy especially when economy isn’t all that cheap anymore.
