What’s a tourist scam you fell for and wish you’d known about?

I’ll start with mine.

Landed in Lisbon around 10pm, completely wiped. Grabbed a taxi from the official stand, meter running, everything looked legit. Halfway through the ride he asks if it’s my first time in Portugal. I say yes.

About ten minutes later, right before we arrive, he turns off the meter. When we get to the hotel he pulls out a laminated card and tells me there’s “airport zone pricing” and the fare is €45. The meter had been around €15.

I knew it was BS, but I was alone, tired, it was dark, and my suitcase was in the trunk. I tried to take a photo of his taxi number and he got aggressive. I paid just to get out of there.

Hotel staff later confirmed it’s a very common scam.

Curious what others have run into. What’s a scam you fell for that you really wish someone had warned you about beforehand?
