A couple of months ago, I was on a 13.5-hour flight and had pre-booked a window seat since I prefer it. The flight was fairly full, but I ended up with an empty middle seat between me and another woman in the aisle.
About an hour and a half into the flight, I was asleep when I was suddenly woken up by her moving into the middle seat next to me. She then stayed there for most of the flight, roughly nine hours, spreading out across the shared armrests and sleeping.
Since the whole row wasn’t occupied, I found it awkward and wasn’t sure how to respond. I didn’t say anything at the time because I was confused and not fully awake, and we also didn’t speak the same language.
Later, when she got up to use the restroom, I also got up and ended up returning to my original space first. After that, she went back to her aisle seat and stayed there for the remainder of the flight.
I’m curious what others would have done in this situation, especially since I’ve never experienced someone moving into the middle seat like that when there were empty seats available.
