I work as a duty manager at a small boutique hotel in Finland and we don’t get American guests very often. We just had a strange booking and I’m wondering if this is some known scam or just someone being careless.
Back in autumn, an American guest booked 3 rooms for 5 nights each. He sent a photo of his passport, gave the names of five other guests, and we agreed on a discounted rate.
He then asked us to charge a 50% deposit split across two credit cards and emailed full card details including CVVs. Our system couldn’t process the deposit since it’s set up for Finnish banks, which we explained after New Year’s.
After that, total silence. No response to follow-ups, no reply to the booking confirmation sent about two weeks before arrival, and of course they never showed up.
Does this sound like some kind of scam attempt, or is it more likely just a guest ghosting after plans changed? Curious if anyone has seen something similar.
