Weather anxiety before a long haul is the worst

Totally get why you’re stressed. When you’ve planned a trip for months, watching the weather forecast turn ugly right before departure is brutal.

Dallas can handle some winter weather, but freezing rain is the wildcard. It’s not usually about the snow itself, it’s about ice on aircraft and runways, and how long de icing takes. Late night flights like an 11pm departure are a mixed bag. Sometimes they survive because things improve overnight, sometimes they get cut if delays cascade all afternoon.

Airlines usually won’t cancel proactively unless they’re confident the operation will be wrecked. More often you’ll see long delays first, then cancellations if crews time out or aircraft are out of position.

As for switching flights, unfortunately that’s pretty normal with award tickets. Until there’s a waiver or an actual delay or cancellation, they won’t move you for free, and paying $1,000 cash instead of 40k points just isn’t worth it.

Best move right now is to:

Keep checking for a weather waiver

Watch earlier flights on the same route to see how they’re operating

Be ready to act fast if they cancel or delay, since that’s when flexibility opens up

It sucks, but you’re doing the right thing by monitoring it instead of panicking early. Hopefully the weather underperforms and you’re on your way Friday night.
