I happened to be mid-boarding at ORD when the ground stop hit. Gate agents suddenly went quiet, phones started ringing nonstop, and then came the announcement all United flights were temporarily on hold due to some operations issue. No one really had details at first, just that it wasn’t weather and there was no mechanical problem. The cabin crew looked just as surprised as we were.
Turns out it was a fire alarm at United’s ops center. Didn’t even delay us by that much, maybe 30-40 minutes total, but the vibe was tense for a bit. Lots of people nervously refreshing flight apps, assuming it was another IT meltdown or worse. One guy next to me thought the entire network had crashed again like Alaska’s earlier this month.
Credit to the crew though, they kept things calm and professional. Everyone eventually relaxed when we heard it wasn’t serious. But yeah never thought I’d get grounded because of a fire alarm hundreds of miles from the runway. Travel in 2025, man.
