I am currently at Abu Dhabi airport after missing my connecting Etihad flight due to a very tight transfer.
My itinerary was Melbourne to Abu Dhabi on EY461, followed by Abu Dhabi to Athens on EY187 with only a 1 hour connection. The first flight was delayed on departure and arrived later than scheduled, which left very little time to make the connection.
By the time I reached the gate, it was already closed and the connecting flight had departed. There were several other passengers from the same incoming flight in a similar situation. It did not seem like any accommodation was made for the delay, even though the connecting flight did not appear to be full.
As a result, I missed my onward travel plans from Athens and had to be rebooked on a longer alternative route. However, additional costs related to my onward booking were not covered.
Overall, this experience has significantly increased my total travel time and disruption, and I would caution others against booking such tight layovers through Abu Dhabi.
