My partner and I were traveling from Amsterdam to France on the Eurostar and placed our backpacks in the overhead storage above our seats.
During the stop in Brussels, my partner’s black backpack was apparently swapped with another similar-looking bag. After the train departed, we realized the bag was gone.
At first we thought it might have been a mistake, but after speaking with Eurostar staff, we were told it was likely theft. We were also able to track the bag using AirTags, which showed it moving through Brussels and later being discarded while the wallet and other items were taken elsewhere.
We have reported the incident to Eurostar, Belgian police, and our travel insurance. This seems to match similar reports from other travelers.
The main takeaway is to be extremely cautious with overhead luggage on Eurostar, particularly around the Brussels stop, as theft incidents may occur
