Vrbo canceled our stay at 3am on the day of arrival and left us stranded

This happened today and I’m still in shock. We’re a family of five and booked a Marriott run resort in Kauai for late December through Orbitz/Vrbo, something we’ve done many times before without issues.

We never got check in info, so I messaged the host two days before the trip. No reply, no phone number. Didn’t think much of it. We land in Kauai after an early flight and find out Vrbo canceled our reservation at 3am that same day. No call, no rebooking, just an email blaming a vague “house rules violation,” which makes zero sense for a Marriott resort that’s still listed on the site.

Vrbo couldn’t find us anything. They said we could book on our own and they’d reimburse the difference, but only up to the original amount and only for the same room type. That was basically impossible in Kauai during peak season, especially last minute.

We called over 20 places and finally found a single room with one king bed for all five of us, at the same price we were paying for a two bedroom suite. That’s where we’re staying now.

It really feels like overbooking and they just picked us to cancel. Doing this on the day of arrival, with kids, is beyond frustrating. If anyone has dealt with something similar or knows who’s actually responsible here, I’d appreciate any insight.

Trying to stay positive so this doesn’t ruin the whole trip, but this was a brutal way to start a vacation.
