I finally got to visit Kalaupapa on Molokai now that tours have restarted, and it was nothing like a regular sightseeing stop. Flying in on the small plane and stepping onto that isolated peninsula gave me chills, it’s beautiful, but you can still feel the heavy history. Walking through the old settlement, the churches, and Father Damien’s grave site was powerful.
The guides were incredible, sharing personal stories that made it so much more than just dates and facts. It felt quiet and sacred, and honestly pretty emotional. I left grateful that the site is being preserved and shared with respect. Definitely not a touristy day out, but one of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had in Hawaii.
