I recently took the Empire Builder from Chicago to St. Paul and booked a roomette for one since I was extremely sleep deprived and wanted to rest.
After boarding, I asked the sleeping car attendant if I could handle the turndown service myself. He said that was fine if I knew how to do it, which I have done before.
I started setting up the lower bunk, but the sheets were clearly dirty with makeup stains and debris. Since I was exhausted and couldn’t find the attendant, I decided to just use the top bunk instead, which had clean sheets, and went to sleep.
A few hours later, the attendant woke me up and said we were approaching the station and that he needed to prepare the room for the next passenger. He then seemed annoyed and pointed out that I had used both beds, saying it created extra work for him.
When I explained that the lower bunk sheets were dirty, he became more irritated and told me to move to another room down the hall. After that, he did not interact with me again.
I understand that using both beds may have added work, and maybe I should have called him about the dirty sheets, but I was extremely tired and not thinking clearly. It also did not seem like a major issue given how quickly he reset everything.
I have taken similar trips before and never had an experience like this. Was I out of line here, or was the reaction a bit excessive?
