The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory for Cambodia, raising it to Level 2“exercise increased caution” due to escalating risks involving crime, landmines, and regional unrest. Travelers are especially warned against visiting areas within 50 kilometers of the Cambodian-Thai border, where armed conflict and artillery fire have led to civilian casualties. Landmines also remain a serious hazard in several provinces including Siem Reap and Battambang, areas that are otherwise popular with tourists.
As someone considering a Southeast Asia trip, this definitely gives me pause. Cambodia’s history and culture are so rich, but safety has to come first. Would this advisory change your travel plans? Have you been recently and felt safe, or did you run into any issues?
