This is a wild reminder of how dangerous abandoned sites can be. Two guys were exploring the old Lehigh Cement Plant in Catskill when one of them fell about 100 feet down a silo shaft. Miraculously, he survived and had to be rescued by a technical rescue team. Both have since been charged with trespassing.
The guy who fell is an urban exploration photographer, definitely a sobering moment for the urbex community.
I get the draw of photographing these historic ruins, but some of these places are seriously unsafe. The Lehigh plant has been shut down since 1982 and is clearly off-limits.
Have you ever explored an abandoned spot like this? How do you balance the thrill with staying safe and legal?
