I recently had two very full flights with British Airways from LHR to YYZ and back.
I’m a Silver member but usually travel economy for work.
On the outbound flight, I didn’t realize I’d been upgraded until I boarded and noticed I was in a premium seat (row 20). I initially assumed economy was overbooked and didn’t think much of it, just enjoyed the better seat and service.
On the return flight, I printed my ticket and again was told at boarding that I had been upgraded. This time it surprised me even more, since I had actually selected a front-row economy seat when booking, and I could see that seat was still empty when I boarded.
Not sure if it was due to overbooking, operational reasons, or just availability in premium economy, but I’m very grateful for the experience. Hoping for similar luck on my next trip in a couple of weeks.
