Aloha, I am a Honolulu-based traveler and wanted to share some thoughts on how United’s Hawaii service has changed over the years. While Hawaiian Airlines still has a strong connection to local culture and identity, I have been impressed by how much United has improved its product recently.
Some of the biggest changes I have noticed include having more Hawaii-based crew members onboard, which creates a more authentic and comfortable experience for both locals and visitors. Communication feels more natural, and there is value in having staff who actually live in Hawaii and understand the culture firsthand.
I have also noticed more local touches onboard, such as partnerships with Hawaii-based brands and products that help make the experience feel more connected to the destination.
Food options have also become more tailored toward local tastes. In the past, catering often felt generic, but now there seem to be more island-inspired options available even on flights to and from the mainland.
Another area that stands out is a stronger sense of cultural awareness. The onboard atmosphere feels more respectful and less dependent on stereotypical themes, creating a more genuine representation of Hawaii.
I also appreciated the availability of widebody aircraft on certain routes, which in the past sometimes offered better upgrade opportunities and a more premium experience.
United is not trying to become Hawaiian Airlines, and it probably never will. However, the progress in improving its Hawaii product and, in some cases, competing directly with Hawaii’s flagship carrier has been interesting to watch.
