United offloaded nearly all checked bags on my EWR–HND flight due to weight limits

Our flight from Newark to Tokyo was delayed about two hours because the plane was 3,000 pounds overweight. The pilot announced they’d need to offload cargo which ended up being almost all checked bags. Only about 40 made it onboard, and the rest were rerouted through SFO.

We had AirTags in ours and luckily got them the next day, but it definitely made for an anxious arrival. I get that safety comes first, but how does a flight end up that overweight in the first place? Anyone else run into this before?
