I recently booked a United flight using miles and a 10,000 mile certificate. I am not very experienced with award travel, so I was surprised by what I found.
The itinerary was a short regional flight to ORD followed by a longer flight to another regional airport. The “First Class” award pricing appeared similar to Economy, so I decided to book it.
After booking, I noticed I could only select First Class seats on the short regional segment, while the longer segment did not allow First Class seat selection. I contacted chat support but did not get a clear answer, and when I called United, the explanation was not helpful. I was told award pricing is dynamic, and the interaction ended without resolution.
After calling again, I was finally told that this was a “mixed cabin” itinerary, meaning only one segment is actually in First Class. I pointed out that this makes the mileage pricing feel misleading since most of the trip is Economy.
In the end, I was given complimentary seat assignments in the front row of Economy Plus for the longer segment.
