Flying from Chicago to San Diego today and had one of the weirdest boarding experiences I’ve ever had. I’m only Gold status, Group 4, and originally booked an exit row seat.
While boarding, I scanned my mobile boarding pass and even got asked the usual exit row “willing and able” question, so I assumed nothing had changed. I headed down the jetway, got to my seat, and found someone already sitting there.
I politely mentioned that I thought he might be in my seat. He checked his boarding pass and it showed the exact same seat number. I pulled up my pass on my phone to compare and at first it still showed my original seat. Then I refreshed/looked again and suddenly realized I’d been moved to Row 3 in First Class.
The guy and I just looked at each other for a second before I apologized and explained I didn’t have my glasses on. Had to walk all the way back through the crowd before eventually making my way up front once boarding finished.
Never had an upgrade happen that late in the process before, especially after already being asked the exit row questions. Considering the flight had already been delayed more than 3 hours, I’ll happily take the unexpected win.
