Was in the back of an Uber with two other people. Put my seatbelt on, felt it click like normal. At the end of the ride, it wouldn’t release. Red button wouldn’t move, nothing.
Driver claimed I put it on backwards, which I know I didn’t. He tried pulling it out, then grabbed a screwdriver and literally broke the plastic housing apart and hit the metal piece until it came off. After that, he said he’d take it to a professional to fix.
Then it got weird. He asked for my brother’s full name, phone number, and took photos of his driver’s license since he ordered the ride. He said he’d send us the bill and suggested not going through Uber because Uber “owes him money.”
I’m 20 and I’ve worn seatbelts my whole life. I didn’t misuse it. Isn’t it the driver’s responsibility to have working, safe equipment in the car? Are we actually liable for this, or is he trying to push the cost onto us?
