Just read about a rescue in the Badlands Wilderness Area east of Bend where two hikers got lost on the Flatiron Rock Trail after running out of food and water. One of them even had a medical issue, and they were still about four miles from the trailhead when they called for help. Search and Rescue teams hiked in with supplies, and luckily both hikers made it out safely without needing hospital care.
It’s a good reminder how quickly a hike can turn risky in summer heat. I’ve been on that trail before, and while it’s beautiful, it can get brutally dry and hot. I always pack more water than I think I’ll need, plus some snacks and a map just in case. Have you ever had a hike go wrong, or had to be rescued yourself? What’s your top tip for staying safe on the trail?
