Sharing this because I’m genuinely stunned by how it was handled and wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.
Route was Kuala Lumpur to Atlanta via Istanbul, both segments operated by Turkish Airlines.
What happened:
• I had two crochet hooks in my carry on
• I’ve traveled with them multiple times before without issue
• Before the second flight I went through two separate security screenings
• The final screening was extremely thorough. I had to open every compartment, makeup inspected, even drank my own water in front of staff
• At no point did security say crochet hooks were prohibited
After boarding and taking my seat, I started crocheting. A crew member approached and asked to see the hook. I complied and also handed over the second one when asked.
He took both and said they would be discarded. Later, another crew member told me they would be transported to Atlanta and I could retrieve them at Lost and Found.
On arrival:
• Airport Lost and Found had no record
• Airline counter was unattended
• Eventually a staff member said items taken onboard are normally returned upon disembarkation, not sent to Lost and Found
• I was told to file a claim online
Customer service later told me to file a baggage irregularity claim.
This was not lost luggage.
This was not an item I forgot.
This was property taken onboard after clearing security and never returned.
My frustration is less about the crochet hooks themselves, though they are not easily replaceable, and more about the lack of consistency and accountability.
Why can cabin crew override airport security clearance?
If something is confiscated, shouldn’t there be a clear chain of custody and return process?
Why is this being categorized like lost baggage instead of onboard confiscation?
Has anyone dealt with something similar on Turkish or another airline?
At this point I’m considering filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation since the flight terminated in the U.S.
Appreciate any insight on airline policy or next steps.
