I’m in Cologne and fractured my ankle pretty badly five days ago — surgery, titanium plate, screws, the whole deal. I have a big boot and crutches and have to fly back to the US this Saturday. I’ve got wheelchair assistance booked and a doctor’s note saying I’m fit to fly, but I need space to keep my foot elevated.
United originally had me in middle seats in the back on all three flights, which isn’t happening. I called and the agent basically said “too bad” and that was that. I can’t afford an upgrade, I just need something like bulkhead, extra legroom, or even an aisle on the right side so I can stretch out my left foot.
Was hoping gate agents might be able to help day-of? Anyone been through this?
Update: Found the medical seating request form online and filled it out fingers crossed.
Update 2: Huge shoutout to Andrew at United. He somehow secured me an entire row on the long-haul and a bulkhead seat on the final leg. Still working on CGN→LHR with Eurowings, that one might just be rough.
