Trump administration orders Delta, Aeromexico to end joint venture by January 1

The U.S. Transportation Department has ordered Delta Air Lines and Aeroméxico to terminate their nearly nine-year joint venture by January 1, 2026, citing ongoing anticompetitive effects in U.S.–Mexico City markets. The DOT found that the partnership’s scheduling, pricing, and capacity coordination gave them an unfair advantage, especially at Mexico City Airport, where slot allocation issues worsened tensions. Despite the order, Delta will keep its 20% equity in Aeroméxico, and important collaborations like codeshares and frequent flyer linkages will remain. Both airlines voiced disappointment—claiming lost connectivity and tourism benefits—while DOT said the venture could be reapplied for if competitive conditions change.
