I meant to post this earlier, but I recently flew from Rome (FCO) to Seattle (SEA) and wanted to share a detailed trip report. We had originally flown into Rome via British Airways before taking this return segment.
I booked economy tickets for two people using miles and a companion credit, totaling about 42,000 miles. About three weeks before departure, I submitted an upgrade request. After initially thinking upgrades would be unlikely, I later saw that we were upgraded around 70 hours before the flight, even though no notification came until the following day. There appeared to be ample business class availability leading up to departure.
At FCO, we arrived early and cleared security and passport control fairly quickly thanks to fast-track access provided at check-in. The Alaska counter had very short lines compared to other airlines.
We had lounge access options and visited both the British Airways lounge and another lounge, with the latter being noticeably better in terms of comfort and cleanliness.
Getting to the gate required additional walking and a shuttle transfer, so it took longer than expected.
The aircraft itself was a relatively new 787 and felt fresh and clean. Onboard amenities, including bedding and a amenity kit, were high quality. Service was attentive and meals were plentiful. Sleep quality was somewhat limited due to seat design, but still significantly better than economy.
The pre-landing meal included a specialty non-alcoholic drink and dessert, which stood out as a highlight.
