Usually fly from Birmingham, Alabama to Washington DC every March for a conference. For the past few years it was always Southwest, but after the recent changes decided to try Amtrak instead.
The trip actually went really well. Left on time, arrived on time, and the crew was great. Even managed to sleep about six hours on the train, which was a big surprise.
Normally when flying, especially with layovers, it means waking up super early, walking all over multiple airports, and by the time the hotel is reached there are 10–20k steps and total exhaustion.
With the train it was completely different. After arriving in DC, it was just a quick 20 minute Metro ride to the hotel, and there was still enough energy to go out for a walk instead of crashing on the bed.
