I have an upcoming trip to Europe in July with a layover in Dubai on Emirates. Given current concerns about potential delays or cancellations, I am trying to figure out how best to protect myself in case something goes wrong.
My current idea is to book a separate backup flight that does not route through Dubai, ideally one that can be cancelled for a fee. If my Emirates flight operates normally, I would cancel the backup and accept the cancellation cost. If the Emirates flight is disrupted or cancelled, I would instead use the backup booking and try to recover costs from Emirates if possible.
However, the backup option is currently very expensive, so I am unsure if this is a sensible strategy or if there are better ways to manage the risk of disruption.
