Spring break travel turned into a stressful situation when a same-day flight plan nearly caused a missed cruise departure.
The trip began with a 7:30 PM flight from O'Hare International Airport, which was delayed multiple times due to storms (first to 8:45 PM, then 10:45 PM) before being canceled entirely around 8 PM. With a cruise boarding deadline of 3 PM the next day, alternative options were urgently explored.
The airline indicated no available flights until Saturday and issued a refund. With limited options from nearby airports such as Midway International Airport, Milwaukee, and Indianapolis, none could guarantee timely arrival without excessive last-minute costs.
Ultimately, the decision was made to drive to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and catch a flight from there, which successfully allowed arrival in time to board the cruise the following day.
This experience highlighted the risks of same-day travel for cruise departures and reinforced the recommendation to arrive a day early to avoid potential disruptions.
