Just a PSA based on my experience: I was flying HKG → PVG → DFW with Cathay Pacific and assumed my checked bags would be transferred through on the same ticket.
However, I was told at check-in that this is not possible in Shanghai. Multiple agents confirmed the same internal guidance: I must go through immigration at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, collect my luggage, and then re-check everything for the onward international flight.
They said that while some airlines may offer baggage-through service at PVG, Cathay Pacific does not support it in this case.
This raises concerns for me because I may need a transit visa just to collect my baggage, and I have a limited prior travel history to China. I’m unsure how strict the entry process will be and whether this could cause issues with my connection.
Has anyone experienced this situation at PVG before, especially when connecting internationally on separate airline handling rules? Any advice would be appreciated, and I’ll update after the transit.
