I’m partway through a three-week trip across Italy and have already run into multiple train disruptions that I didn’t expect based on my research.
The first issue happened when traveling from Rome to Venice. The airport express train from Rome Termini to the airport was delayed, changed platforms, and then later reported as out of service for several hours. This caused long taxi queues and nearly made me miss my flight, so I ended up paying extra for a train to Venice instead.
Another delay happened on the route from Varenna to Milan, where the train ran on a single track for much of the journey, stopping repeatedly to let other trains pass. A 65-minute trip ended up taking almost two hours.
The latest issue was traveling from Milan toward Cinque Terre. The train stopped shortly after departure due to a problem at the next station, and we were stuck for over an hour with an estimated total delay of around five hours instead of three.
I’m wondering if this level of disruption is normal for Italian trains or if I’ve just been unlucky. I usually plan buffer time, but these delays are significantly beyond what I expected. Any advice or perspective would be appreciated.
