I was lucky enough to hike Vesuvius a few years ago, so it’s surreal to hear that wildfires have forced trail closures across the national park. The flames have scorched the Terzigno forest and threatened nearby towns like Ercolano and Ottaviano. Seeing images of smoke rising from the volcano with Pompeii still open nearby just adds a whole layer of eerie.
French firefighters are also dealing with their biggest wildfire since 1949, and the heatwave sweeping southern Europe is only making things worse. As climate change accelerates, I’m starting to wonder how much longer some of these iconic spots will be safe to explore.
Anyone been to Vesuvius recently? Or had travel plans derailed by fires this summer?
